With a choice of V6 or V8 power, the 2004 Explorer provides you with the power you need to move easily - through busy expressway traffic or the mud of an off-road trail. Plus, it delivers that power with remarkable smoothness and reliability, thanks to an advanced five-speed automatic transmission.

The NBX Package combines equipment which enhances off-road capabilities with appearance features to create a truly distinctive Explorer. The package includes unique black exterior trim, skid plates and off-road tuned suspension.

Explorer's ControlTracTM four-wheel drive system offers set-and-forget convenience. When road conditions require it, Automatic Four-Wheel Drive (A4WD) automatically sends torque to the front wheels. When the wheels regain traction, ControlTrac sends power back to them.

Explorer XLS, XLT and Eddie Bauer models are certified Flexible Fuel Vehicles. Featuring a standard 210-horsepower 4.0L V6 engine, they deliver robust performance using regular (87 octane) gasoline or smog-reducing blends of gasoline and ethanol up to E85 (85% ethanol). For heavy trailer towing and added performance, move up to the 239-horsepower of Explorer's 4.6L Triton V8 - a standard feature on the Limited series and optional on XLT and Eddie Bauer models.

Explorer's optional Reverse Sensing System brings an added measure of confidence when parking. Through a series of beeps heard inside the cabin, it alerts you to the presence of certain objects behind the vehicle when backing up.

Take the stress out of rush-hour driving with Explorer's ear-pleasing audio systems, including this 300-watt audiophile system and six-disc CD changer. It's standard on Eddie Bauer and Limited models, and available as an option on Explorer XLT.

Keep everyone in the back happy with the optional Rear Seat DVD Entertainment System, featuring a DVD player, flip-down LCD colour monitor with wireless remote control and wireless headphones.

All Explorer models are available with an optional Safety CanopyTM System. Using advanced sensors, it deploys side-curtain airbags in certain side-impact or rollover events. Each airbag covers approximately 2/3 of the side glass and stays inflated for a longer duration to provide enhanced head and shoulder protection.*

Explorer is equipped with a standard Personal Safety SystemTM - a unique combination of air bag, safety belt and sensor technologies. In a frontal collision, it analyzes the severity of the impact, the driver's position relative to the steering wheel, and whether or not the front safety belts are buckled. Then it determines how best to protect the driver and front passenger - all in a matter of milliseconds.*
